HIS strip ran in The Charlotte News, an evening newspaper equally long forgotten. It was a good newspaper, back in the days when such things really mattered. I can still remember it vividly. Its layout was different from the morning newspaper, which tended toward stodginess to indicate it was meant to be Taken Seriously. The News' headlines were in a sans-serif bold, the first I had seen. It had interesting features. Personal Chat was a letters column they published on the front page of the local section. Unlike the letters to the editor, which leaned more toward writers who argued their position with quotes from the Bible, Chat writers had to be more interesting to be published. Call Quest was the consumer help line, and a source of embarrassment to me when, as a high school intern, I called the AMC to find out what training they offered in foreign cars. ("We're the American Motor Corporation," the fellow helpfully informed me.) |
