If you've never been to a convention before, it's pretty hard to describe just what's going on. It's one thing and everything. It's panel discussions and hallway debates, raucous times in the hotel bar and bits of quiet shopping in the dealers room. There's relationships being formed and networks under construction, friendships renewed and old stories told, retold, embellished, falsified. A convention is the creation of an instant community, formed for a few days before being willingly broken apart.

This account, by its very nature, cannot capture everything that's going on here. There's just too much to see, too much to hear, and even writing it down means a certain loss of accuracy. You can't hear the laughter from a well-told tale. You're just not there to see it all.

So this will be an incomplete story. Fairly longish postcards from Washington, D.C., with a few photos attached. But it'll give you some idea of what's going on here, and maybe you'll get to see a little of what I'm seeing now.

Shameless plug
